Coldstream targeting outdoor water use for conservation

The District of Coldstream is taking a targeted approach to outdoor water use across municipal parks, sports fields and landscaped areas to help conserve water.

The Regional District of North Okanagan is currently under Stage 3 water regulations.

The district said its current watering practices include watering sports fields once a week using automatic irrigation systems. These fields and facilities include the Creekside Park ball diamonds and soccer fields, the Lavington Park ball diamonds and soccer fields, and the Coldstream Park sports fields, only as needed.

Officials said irrigation zones are scheduled on different days to maximize efficiency while ensuring each area receives only the water needed to maintain safe playing conditions.

Crews are also hand-watering plants and shrubs at Cenotaph Park once a week. Landscaping at the fire halls and municipal hall is watered through drip irrigation systems.

New trees in Lavington Park, Cenotaph Park and Great Vernon Athletic Park are placed in water bags and hand-watered once or twice a week to support establishment.

The district said these measures help balance responsible water conservation with the need to maintain safe, functional public spaces for residents, sports organizations and community groups.
