The City of Enderby has recognized Peter Gilowski as the recipient of this year’s Lifetime Civic Merit Award.
On June 19, he accepted the award from Mayor Huck Galbraith and councillors Tundra Baird, Sarah Yerhoff, Shawn Shishido and David Ramey outside the Enderby Curling Club.
“I moved here with my family in 1966 and there is no doubt in my mind that we accomplished a lot in Enderby,” Gilowski said.
He has been a member of the Enderby and District Lions Club since 1968. In a statement, Gilowski said that over his 58 years with the organization, he has held nearly every executive role. He said he and fellow Lifetime Civic Merit Award recipient John Pavelich launched the annual Lions Garage Sale, a months-long event.
The garage sale injects hundreds of thousands of dollars into Enderby and District projects, non-profit organizations and community events.
From the podium, he said, “I was very proud to get the high school to Enderby, I worked hard.”
“I worked hard for the seniors complex, which is a very successful building and the seniors love it. And I was always in business. I have many, many businesses,” he said.
The city said Gilowski is most proud of helping bring A.L. Fortune Secondary to Enderby.
Gilowski said he personally called the Ministry of Education and requested a meeting about establishing a high school in Enderby.
The city said it is fortunate to have benefited from his combination of business acumen and commitment to the community.
