Prescribed burn in Lavington set for next week

A prescribed burn covering up to 40 hectares in the Harvey Reservoir area will take place next week.

Burning is scheduled for Friday, March 27 and could begin early in the morning. Smoke may be visible from Lavington, Coldstream, Lumby, Vernon, Trinity Valley and surrounding areas, as well as to travellers along Highway 6.

The wildfire risk reduction project is intended to protect communities, restore ecosystems and contribute to research as part of a long-term effort to reduce wildfire risk in the area and assess fire behaviour in chipped fuel beds.

Burning will proceed if conditions are suitable and allow for smoke dispersal during operations, though smoke may linger in the following days.

Staff from the B.C. Wildfire Service will prepare, control and monitor the burn.

In a statement, the B.C. government advised residents to run portable air cleaners with windows and doors closed, reduce the length and intensity of outdoor activities and manage pre-existing conditions.
