Okanagan runner breaks world record in Vernon

Okanagan local Savannah Wilde broke the Guinness World Record for the fastest barefoot 50-kilometre run Tuesday at Greater Vernon Athletic Park.

The run is the latest addition to Wilde’s history of endurance challenges, including a 300-kilometre ultra-triathlon, a five-hour continuous run and a “gruesome” 500-kilometre barefoot run through Uganda in 2021.

Her initial goal was to finish in five-and-a-half hours, but she crossed the finish line 22 minutes earlier.

Wilde said the race meant so much to her because of a recent car accident that left her with a broken neck and fractures throughout her head and spine.

Her athletic career was in jeopardy.

In front of family and friends, Wilde broke the world record, proving anyone can beat the odds and make the ultimate comeback.
