Vernon Fire Rescue Services (VFRS) is reminding residents and visitors ahead of Canada Day that fireworks and sky lanterns are not permitted within the City of Vernon.
VFRS said preventing human-caused fires is important because of the current high fire danger rating.
“With the current high fire danger rating in the city, it’s critical that everyone takes extra care,” Vernon Fire Chief David Lind said. “Under these conditions, even a small spark can start a fire that spreads rapidly. We’re asking residents to practice FireSmart habits around their homes and properties and to report any signs of smoke or fire immediately. We all have a role to play in protecting our community.”
The City of Vernon said there are safer alternatives for celebrating Canada Day without fireworks, including glow sticks, noisemakers and battery-powered candles. Campfires are also permitted where allowed under city bylaws.
Using or storing consumer fireworks without a permit may result in fines of up to $300. Multiple fines may be be issued for a single infraction.
