The Regional District of North Okanagan (RDNO) has made minor changes to enforcement of its Stage 3 water restrictions following concerns expressed by residents.
The RDNO board of directors met Wednesday, June 17, to review the restrictions and consider public feedback. Officials have amended the restrictions to better align with community needs while continuing to protect the water supply.
The RDNO made the announcement the following day, saying residents told officials that limiting water use to two days a week created challenges for maintaining food gardens. Residents may now water food gardens and potted plants daily, as required to maintain plant health.
Officials added that watering must still be done using micro-jet systems, drip irrigation or hand watering. Residents are still urged not to overwater.
The RDNO also announced a change regarding pools. While filling or refilling pools remains prohibited, pool topups are now permitted to replace water lost to evaporation, up to one per cent of pool volume or about two centimetres per week.
The change is intended to ensure the proper operation of pool filtration systems and maintain water quality.
“You can significantly reduce evaporation by lowering your pool temperature and/or using a pool cover,” the RDNO said in its announcement.
Officials said the adjustments reflect feedback from residents regarding food security and plant health, the need to balance conservation with practical use and alignment with the Stage 3 watering restriction amendments.
All other Stage 3 restrictions remain unchanged.
