A new facility aimed at improving wildfire preparedness in Cherryville is complete, with a grand opening scheduled for Sunday.
The Regional District of North Okanagan (RDNO) said the Firewatch Building was constructed without increasing local taxes, with funding secured to support training and operations for the next two years.
The facility will house firefighting equipment and provide space for volunteer training and community education.
The Cherry Ridge Management Committee contributed $120,000 toward construction and helped establish the Cherryville Firewatch Society to support long-term wildfire preparedness.
“This project demonstrates what can be achieved when a community comes together around a shared goal,” Jim Johnson, director of RDNO Electoral Area E said.
“The commitment of volunteers, donors, and community partners has created a lasting resource that will help protect Cherryville residents and support wildfire preparedness going forward.”
The grand opening for the Firewatch Building will take place on Sunday, Oct. 25, from 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m., located at 1217 Highway 6.
