Vernon local wins First Nations art award

Vernon’s Sheldon Pierre Louis has received the Crabtree McLennan Emerging Artists Polygon Award in First Nations Art from the BC Achievement Foundation.

Louis is a Syilx/Okanagan artist whose multidisciplinary practice spans painting, murals, media art, carving, traditional Syilx materials and traditional hand poke tattooing.

He began his artistic journey as a youth muralist on Vernon’s award-winning community mural project. Louis now mentors the next generation or artists, encouraging expression as a pathway to confidence, cultural pride and community leadership.

Sixteen BC businesses and individuals honoured across three categories, including the Indigenous Business Award, Sam Carter Award in Applied Art + Design and Polygon Award in First Nations Art.

“We are thrilled to honour this year’s fall recipients who represent the very best of our province from a diverse selection of communities, industries, and backgrounds,” Rup Grewal, BC Achievement Foundation executive Director said.

“At its heart, BC Achievement is about celebrating the remarkable people, artists, entrepreneurs, businesses, and organizations that British Columbians nominate from their own communities.”

“On behalf of the BC Achievement Board, I want to thank the independent jurors, community partners, and sponsors whose dedication makes these programs possible, and offer my sincere congratulations to all of this year’s recipients,” Walter Pela, board chair of the BC Achievement Foundation said. “Their achievements reflect the strength, creativity, and resilience found in communities across B.C.”

Indigenous Business Award recipients will be honoured throughout November, with the Polygon Award in First Nations Art recipients honoured on Nov 24.
