The Regional District of North Okanagan (RDNO) said it is taking steps to address the challenges and impacts of Stage 3 water restrictions on the community.
In a statement, the regional district said it recognizes this is a difficult and stressful time and wants the community to know extensive work has been underway.
To strengthen its response, the regional district has activated an Emergency Operations Centre and assigned a task number through Emergency Management and Climate Readiness. Officials said the move will allow staff to investigate available provincial support and co-ordinate with partner agencies.
“Recognizing the region’s dependence on agriculture, the RDNO is working closely with the Ministry of Agriculture and Food and has hired two dedicated Agricultural positions to support outreach, communication, and coordination with producers,” officials said.
Officials said the regional district is pursuing opportunities to supplement water supplies throughout the system, including bringing the Antwerp Deep Well online to help offset declining levels in Duteau Reservoir and assess the potential to transfer water from Swan Lake to Goose Lake Reservoir.
Mental health and wellness resources are also available for farmers and ranchers through the Ministry of Agriculture and Food.
The regional district encouraged people to take care of themselves, reach out for support when needed and continue checking in on friends, neighbours and community members.
