RDNO urges residents to remain vigilant amid elevated wildfire risk

The Regional District of North Okanagan (RDNO) is reminding residents to prepare for a possible evacuation as current weather and environmental conditions may increase the risk of wildfires.

In a statement, the RDNO said it has fully engaged available resources and fire departments to support emergency preparedness, operations and public safety efforts.

Shirley Fowler, chair of the RDNO board of directors, said safety remains the regional district’s highest priority.

“During periods of hot, dry, and windy weather, wildfires can develop and spread quickly, as we are seeing currently in our neighboring communities. We are asking all residents to have their go-bag ready, stay alert, and ensure their households are ready to respond quickly if an emergency occurs,” she said.

The RDNO is urging residents to create a “grab-and-go” bag with essential items such as medication, important documents, clothing, personal identification, device chargers and supplies for pets.

Residents are also encouraged to have an emergency plan agreed upon with family and friends.

The regional district is reminding residents to rely on official sources for accurate and current information, including EmergencyInfoBC, the BC Wildfire Service, DriveBC and local government and emergency management agencies.
